OPITO have introduced a further update to the pre-requisite requirements that you need to know about as an OPITO Rigger / Banksman & Slinger with an initial training certificate and logbook, working towards an assessment certificate (previously stage 3).
Introducing the ‘Grandfather Period’ To help support the implementation of the new pre-requisite requirements, namely the gathering of an evidence portfolio, OPITO have made the decision to bring in the ‘Grandfather Period’.
The ‘Grandfather Period’ will be applied to anyone who completed their Initial Training between 1st Nov 2021 – 31st Nov 2023. You will be asked to provide a workplace experience logbook with evidence of:
- 19 tasks for OPITO Banksman Competence Assessment
- 10 tasks for OPITO Rigger Competence Assessment
Supporting evidence will need to be provided for all tasks within the logbook.

OPITO Banksman Slinger Competence Assessment
Learners must be able to provide:
If you completed you Initial Training prior to 1st Nov 2021:
Learners must have a valid certificate and must provide a fully completed Banksman & Slinger Initial Training Workplace Experience Logbook with 57 tasks. No supporting evidence is required.
If you completed you Initial Training between 1st Nov 2021 and 31st Nov 2023:
Learners must have a valid certificate and must provide a fully completed Banksman & Slinger Initial Training Workplace Experience Logbook with 19 tasks and supporting evidence for all 19 tasks.
If you completed you Initial Training after 1st Dec 2023:
Learners must have a valid certificate and must provide a fully completed Banksman & Slinger Initial Training Workplace Experience Logbook with 57 tasks and supporting evidence for all 57 tasks.
OPITO Rigger Competence Assessment
Delegates must be able to provide:
If you completed you Initial Training prior to 1st Nov 2021:
Learners must have a valid certificate and must provide a fully completed Rigger Initial Training Workplace Experience Logbook with 57 tasks. No supporting evidence is required.
If you completed you Initial Training between 1st Nov 2021 and 31st Nov 2023:
Learners must have a valid certificate and must provide a fully completed Rigger Initial Training Workplace Experience Logbook with 19 tasks and supporting evidence for all 19 tasks.
If you completed you Initial Training after 1st Dec 2023:
Learners must have a valid certificate and must provide a fully completed Rigger Initial Training Workplace Experience Logbook with 57 tasks and supporting evidence for all 57 tasks.
What about Competence Re-Assessments?
There are still no updates to Competence Re-Assessment requirements. A valid and in-date OPITO Banksman Slinger / Rigger Competence Assessment or Reassessment certificate will still be sufficient evidence.
