Course Objectives:

This Product is to establish that the learner has the required underpinning knowledge, understanding and practical skills to undertake the role as a LOLER Competent Person/ LOLER Focal Point at the workplace.

Prerequisites:

It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that learners are ready to be assessed. Learners for competence assessment require:

  1. Suitable and relevant experience in both crane operations and hoisting and lifting operations involving the use of portable lifting equipment
  2. A formal letter from the current employer on company letterhead recommending the candidate for LCP assessment confirming his/her relevant lifting operations knowledge and experience (refer to 3  below) and supervisory capability. This letter shall be sent directly from the employer to the Assessment Centre prior to the assessment taking place
  3.  Knowledge and experience of:
  • LOLER, PUWER and HASAWA regulations
  • Safe Systems of Work
  • Assessment of personnel
  • Management of personnel
  • The inspection of lifting equipment and the concept of discard criteria
  • Safe use of lifting equipment
  • The management of rigging lofts
  • The planning of lifting operations
  • Risk assessment

NOTE to EMPLOYERS: There may be occasions when it is deemed appropriate for learners to undertake a revision course prior to assessment to refresh their knowledge of the regulations.

Fitness:

A good standard of general fitness is required – learners will complete a medical fitness questionnaire at the centre at the commencement of the courses.
